About Farming the Sun

Farming the Sun is Australia’s most diverse community solar energy initiative to date. It is a large-scale collaboration coordinated by Starfish Initiatives and in 2011 was awarded a NSW Government Green Globe Award for its contribution to sustainability and installation of more than $6.7m worth of solar power, solar hot water, solar-thermal heating and cooling systems; training of more than three dozen tradespeople; and a massive level of community awareness and education in sustainable energy.

While Farming the Sun originally began in and focused on the New England High Country, it has now expanded to focus in the NSW North Coast and Riverina regions as well.

In 2012 Farming the Sun shifted its focus to developing community solarfarms. This was made possible through a strategic alliance with Embark Australia, drawing upon their considerable expertise in community solar models.

This work is being successfully concluded with the creation of Australia’s first ever council operated and community funded solarfarms ~ Lismore Community Solarfarms in partnership with Lismore City Council.

Farming the Sun’s focus is now shifting again, back to solar bulk-buys. Details of the current New England North West bulk-buys are below.

SECOND COMMUNITY SOLAR HOT WATER BULK-BUY NOW LAUNCHING

Farming the Sun is now launching a second community bulk-buy of solar hot water systems and making available ~ in collaboration with Endless Solar ~ a range of high quality, evacuated tube solar hot water systems which have been substantially discounted as a benefit of the bulk-buying.

This offer is being made available to residents and businesses throughout the New England region including Tamworth, Inverell, Glen Innes, Armidale, Guyra, Uralla and Walcha.

Farming the Sun is now coordinating a fourth community bulk-buy of solar power systems and making available ~ in collaboration with Eco Energy & Solar Solutions ~ a range of high quality, Tier 1 solar power systems which have been substantially discounted as a benefit of the bulk-buying.

This offer is available to residents, businesses and farms throughout the greater New England North West region including Tamworth, Moree, Armidale, Gunnedah, Uralla, Liverpool Plains, Narrabri, Guyra, Coonabarabran, Walcha, Glen Innes and Tenterfield regions.

NORTH COAST SOLAR POWER & BATTERY STORAGE BULK-BUY

Farming the Sun is pleased to announce that it is investigating the feasibility of a community bulk-buy of high quality solar power and battery storage systems for the Northern Rivers region of NSW.

The Northern Rivers bulk-buy will be open to residents, businesses, councils and community organisations throughout the region. This will include those with existing solar power who want to expand the size of their system and possibly add storage, as well as for those who are installing solar power for the first time.

As a benchmark, Farming the Sun’s current bulk-buy in the New England region is realising discounts of up to 33% better than retail (see here for details).
